End of Season Awards

The annual end-of-season awards ceremony was held on Sunday afternoon (22 September).

The first award should go to the weather; 2013 will go down as a vintage summer and, in stark contrast to the washout of 2012, the boys managed to play all their games this season. Only one Friday training seassion was lost to the weather!

The U11 As finished 4th in their league this year and made the semi-final of the cup; a very respectable effort indeed.

Congratulations to all the boys who took part this season; you're bonding and playing well as a team and the bowling and fielding has improved immeasurably since last season.

We just need to be a little more positive with the bat, so please do come along to the winter nets in order that you can work on your batting technique. Next year the rules change to "you're out when you're out" so as well as working on those scoring shots, we must get the forward and backward defensives as solid as possible.

The award for the most improved player went to Luke Crocker. Luke has a very straight arm, whether bowling or fielding, and was responsible for at least two run-outs with direct hits. He has also developed a solid opening batting partnership with Tom G, running very well between the wickets.

Harry Darlington won the awards for best batsman and best all-rounder. Although he started the season a little quietly with the bat, he finished in devastating form, blitzing the New Brighton bowling attack all round the park in the last league game of the season, and in so doing, snatching an unlikely victory from the jaws of defeat. His bowling was also very solid, taking many wickets at good economy.

The award for best bowler went to Thomas Green, who was leading wicket taker (13 in all) and economical throughout. Tom has a nice, smooth bowling action and has been learning how to swing the ball into the right-hander.

Finally, many thanks to the U11 coaches, Daves Varey and Perry for all the time and effort that they have put in this season, to Keith Andrews, Chairman of the Junior Cricket Club, to all the staff at Oxton and to the parents for their support.  See you in 2014.

Match Report - New Brighton (away) Sun 14 July

Conditions: Dry, warm, sunny with slight breeze

And so to the last League game of an excellent season and a beautiful summer - no matches rained off this year, in stark contrast to the rain-soaked 2012.

Oxton, who welcomed Anthony and Callum from the Under 10s, won the toss and elected to field first. New Brighton got off to a very positive start, finding the boundary a number of times, the number 5 batsman playing particularly well. Well done to Callum for clean bowling the #4 batsman. A couple of late wickets meant that New Brighton finished on 262.

Oxton's response with the bat was initially cagey, with the opening pairing of Toms G and P adding 8 runs. Ollie P and Max continued their recent improvement in form, adding 24 runs for their four overs. But the final pairing of Harry and Mackenzie came to the crease with the score on 231, requiring 32 runs to win. Harry immediately set about the New Brighton bowling, hitting 9 off the first over. Great support from Mackenzie, who resolutely defended his wicket at the other end and helped to keep Harry on strike wherever possible. 13, 10 and 11 off the final three over saw Oxton come back from a very difficult position to run out winners by 12 runs. An excellent fightback and great finale to the League season.

Result
Oxton win by 12 runs

MOTM
Harry, for his excellent batting effort

Champagne moment
Tom P's direct hit run-out from not far in from the boundary. Narrowly beats Oxton being called for one-short early on in their innings - always great to see the rules being meticulously applied ;-)

Match report - Wallasey (home, Cup 2R) Wed 10 July

Conditions: Dry, warm, cloud cover

Although having beaten Wallasey in the League in the first game of the season, the Oxton lads knew that they'd have to perform well to proceed in the Cup. Oxton won the toss and decided to field - a decision that brought immediate dividends as Tom G bowled a wicket maiden to get things started. And good turned to better as wickets were taken in each of the next three overs, bowled by Jack, Ben B-J and Raghuram, leaving Wallasey on 195 after their first pairing. Superb fielding, including a direct hit run-out from 3/4 of the way to the boundary, and two catches behind the sticks by Max, meant that Wallasey were restricted to a total of 230, including the season's best total of 14 (yes, fourteen) wickets for Oxton.

With Luke away on hols, the opening partnership was entrusted to Max and Ollie P, who did a good job to take the score to 210, despite the loss of one wicket. Raghuram and Ben T then really pushed the score on, scoring 10 off the first over and taking the total after their four overs to 232 - already a lead of 2. From now, it was simply a case of not losing too many wickets, and solid partnerships by Ben B-J and Mackenzie, followed by Tom G and Ollie S took the total on to 250. By now, the game was as safe as it could be, and the final pairing of Jack and Tom P were free to play some more expansive shots, which they duly did, bringing the final score to 275 - a resounding 45 run victory.

This was a real team effort with virtually the entire team contributing to the win - well done all.

Result
Oxton win by 45 runs

Tip
Lesson learned from Caldy game; this time there was no panic chasing down 230. Defend the good balls, push for singles to pressurise the fielders and hit the the bad deliveries for four. Simples!

Match report - Caldy (home) Sun 30 June

Conditions: Overcast, calm, with ground gradually drying off after initial moisture.

Well after the excitement of the nail-biting away win at Upton last week, we were all looking forward to see how the lads would measure up against Caldy. Oxton won the toss and elected to field first, which looked like a good call, as the early dampness would slow the outfield (and make scoring more difficult), but improve as the mornig wore on.

By the end of the first over it was looking like an eve better call, as Tom G claimed two wickets, including a very sharp caught & bowled off the last ball. And good became better as a further two wickets fell in Luke's over. The Caldy opening pair then recovered a little managing to finish in positive territory at the end of their four overs. Caldy batted positively throughoutt, regularly finding the boundary, but Oxton kept well in the game by producing a steady stream of wickets. Their fielding was good (including great run outs by both Tom P and Tom G), and particularly good bowling from Tom G, Ben B-J and Jacob meant that despite Caldy's aggressive batting, Oxton claimed a total of 12 wickets, restricting their opponents to 258.

Requiring a run rate of 3 an over, Oxton's reply atrated positively with the opening pairing of Tom G and Luck putting on 23 from their four overs, thanks to some very sharp running, and avoiding the loss of any wickets. Ollie S (equipped with a bat so solid that the mighty Viv Richards would have had trouble lifting) and Jacob however found the fast, accurate Caldy bowling quite a handful and struggled to move the score forward. Next in were Max and Ollie, who played some nice shots, ran sensibly and added 14 to the score. Tom P and Mackenzie struggled with the bat this time, and so Raghuram and Ben B-J were left with the challenging task of finding 33 off their four over.  Despite a valiant effort at throwing the bat at the ball, and a good knock from Ben B-J, a few more wickets went down, and Oxton ended up well short on 232. Well done to Caldy, who played consistently throughout.

Result
Caldy win by 26 runs

Man of the Match
Tom G

Champagne Moment
Tom G's beautifully timed backward cut for 4.

Tip for next match
No need to panic when chasing a modest score - well-run singles (without being suicidal) plus a few boundaries is all that's needed.

Match report - Upton (away) Sun 23 June

Conditions: Strong wind, overcast, occasional light drizzle, damp pitch and outfield

With such a poor forecast, it was a near miracle that this match ever got started, let alone completed. But what a match it was!

Oxton won the toss and decided to bat. Openers Tom G and Luke found themselves up against some good, accurate bowling, and with plenty of bounce in the wicket, found it hard to get going. However, they ran well between the wickets, picking up singles and byes before Luke managed to latch onto a couple of boundaries. Tom unfortunately holed out to short mid on from a nice stroke, leaving the total on 212 from their four overs. Tom P and Ben T were next in, and despite lack of recent match practice, Tom struck the ball well, the partnership moving the score along by another 14 runs. Jack and Edward looked in superb form, playing some fine shots around the park and running quick singles like seasoned pros, without loss of wicket to bring the score on to 255. Raghuram and Mackenzie added a further ten runs to the score and then left Ollie and Max to round off the innings, bringing the total to a respectable looking 273.

With the rain just about holding off and the wind blowing strongly, Upton strated their innings brightly, scoring 13 off the first three overs, before Luke arrived and bowled Ryan out with his very first delivery. Two balls later, Ryan was out again, this time run out by Tom G swooping in from point and hitting the wicket with one stump to aim at. Great stuff, all of which left the first Upton pairing finishing on 205.

Game on, as the next pair came in and confidently played their shots, ran their quick singles and lost just the one wicket (a good c&b by Tom P). 229 after 8 overs.

A run out off Mackenzie's bowling and then Tom G struck with a wicket maiden, thanks to a lovely low diving catch by Jack. 237 after 12 overs.

A strong fourth Upton pairing of Luca and Carl moved the score along briskly without the loss of further wickets - 256 from 16 overs, leaving Upton requiring 18 to win off the final four overs.

Pressure on.

Tidy overs from Tom G and Jack, off which 9 in total were scored. Wickets desperately needed.

Edward bowled the 19th well, but a crisp shot for four and nimble running saw Upton finish the penultimate over on 273 - scored exactly tied and Upton just needeing a single for victory.

Cometh the hour, cometh the man. Up steps Luke for the final over. Super straight bowling, well pitched up gets two all-important dot balls. Then a dab to square leg, some mixed calling and frantic running leaves both batsmen up at one end - Jack, with a super-cool head, refrains from throwing, but runs in, ball in hand to throw down the stumps.

Wicket! But still Upton require only four to win off the remaining three deliveries.

Nervous? Not a bit of it; very next ball, Luke takes a fine catch off his own bowling to all but win the game - Upton, requiring 9 off the last two balls, manage just a single to finish on 266, and Oxton win a very close and exciting game.

Well done to all 20 players on the pitch and thanks to Upton for being good hosts and their grace in such a narrow defeat.

Result
Oxton win by 7 runs

Man of the Match
Luke: 11 off the bat and then great bowling for 2 wickets for a miserly 2 runs off his 3 overs.

Champagne moment
Jack's fantastic catch at mid wicket, comimng as it did at a critical point in the game.

Also, very well done to Max behind the stumps for only conceding 2 byes today - a valuable contribution to today's victory.
